Trades Recognition Australia launches onshore assessment program — +4,000 trades workers/year targeted
A new TRA program assesses onshore visa holders' trade qualifications and practical experience, designed to bring up to 4,000 additional skilled trades workers — primarily construction and electrical — into the workforce annually.
Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has rolled out a streamlined skills assessment program for onshore visa holders with trade qualifications. Construction trades (carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, roof tiling) and electrical trades are the primary target, with the program designed to unlock up to 4,000 additional skilled trades workers annually.
Who it affects
The streamlined process is open to:
- 482 / 485 holders working in a trade occupation onshore
- Applicants with overseas trade qualifications plus 3+ years of supervised practical experience in Australia
- Working Holiday Maker (WHM) participants who completed regional trade work and now hold an offer of skilled employment
Why it matters for PR
A successful TRA assessment is the gating step for:
- Subclass 482 Core Skills stream nomination
- Subclass 186 ENS Direct Entry skills assessment
- State nomination under 190 / 491 for trade ANZSCO codes
The bottleneck for trade-occupation PR applicants has historically been overseas-trained applicants needing to return offshore for assessment. Onshore practical-pathway assessment removes that cost and timeline barrier.
Cost and timeline indication
Initial guidance suggests assessments will follow TRA’s existing fee structure (currently AU$2,500–$3,800 depending on pathway), with target turnaround of 12–16 weeks for complete file submissions.
